Prostate Cancer Treatments: A Cost-Effective Approach for Developing Countries

In Brazil, prostate cancer affects a large number of men each year, with around 71, 730 cases reported annually. The main treatment for advanced hormone-sensitive prostate cancer is androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). However, advanced drugs called androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) are not readily available through the public health system. This study explores a cost-efficient way to treat advanced prostate cancer by comparing surgical castration with medical castration. The goal is to find a method that reduces costs and allows for the inclusion of ARPIs in developing countries.

Surgical castration, a simple procedure, can be a game-changer in treating advanced prostate cancer. It might be less expensive in the long run compared to medical castration. By lowering treatment costs, funding could be redirected to bring in advanced drugs like ARPIs. This could make a real difference in countries where healthcare budgets are tight. Imagine being able to access better medication without breaking the bank. That's what this study aims to achieve. It's about finding a smarter way to manage resources and improve treatment options for prostate cancer patients in developing countries.
