President Trump's Move: Can the U. S. Really Leave the WHO?
WASHINGTON, USAWednesday, January 22, 2025
One expert says a U. S. exit would make the world less healthy and safe. Another thinks it would silence America's voice in global health. They both agree it could increase the risk of deadly pandemics.
Can Trump really withdraw the U. S. from WHO? Yes, but it needs Congress's approval and the U. S. must meet its financial obligations. The U. S. has been a big donor to WHO, giving hundreds of millions each year.
Now, why is Trump doing this? He thinks WHO mishandled COVID-19 and hasn't reformed. The agency did make mistakes, like advising against masks initially. And there was a big sexual abuse scandal during the Ebola response.
WHO says it regrets Trump's announcement and hopes the U. S. will reconsider. The agency has worked with the U. S. to end smallpox and almost wipe out polio. But will they continue to work together? That's the big question.
