Post-Stroke Fatigue: A Closer Look at EBV
USATuesday, January 14, 2025
First, they looked for signs of the virus being reactivated, but they found that the amount of virus floating around was pretty similar in both people who were tired and those who weren't. However, there was something interesting about the antibodies that fight the virus. In people with high fatigue, the antibodies that target the virus's outer shell (called IgM antibodies) were lower. This isn't because these folks have fewer antibodies in general, just that they have fewer EBV-fighting ones.
So, what’s the deal? It seems like the virus itself isn't coming back in people with post-stroke fatigue. But the way their bodies are responding to it might be different. This could mean that the virus reactivated earlier after the stroke and the body is still dealing with it. It's like the body is fighting a shadow of the virus, if you will.
