Phthalates and Gallstones: A Closer Look

Let's talk about phthalates. These are chemicals that show up in a lot of everyday products, and scientists have been trying to figure out if they can increase the risk of getting gallstones. In a study from 2017-2018, researchers looked at urine samples from 1735 adults. They found that two specific types of phthalates, MCOCHP and MHNCH, were linked to a higher chance of developing gallstones. When they combined different kinds of phthalates, the risk was even higher—it doubled!

Interestingly, this effect was stronger in men, older people, and those with obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Even phthalate alternatives weren't off the hook; some of these were linked to even higher risks. This study is important because it shows us how these chemicals can affect our health, especially for those who already have other health issues.
