The tragic tale of Rebecca Cheptegei, an Olympian who was brutally murdered by her own partner just weeks after competing at the Paris Games, has sent shockwaves around the globe. As the world grapples with this senseless act of violence against women, the city of Paris is taking a stand: they want to honor Rebecca's memory by naming a sports venue after her.  

A woman who was at the peak of her athletic career, representing her country on the world stage, was viciously attacked with gasoline and set ablaze...by the person who supposedly loved her most. It begs the question: in a society where domestic violence is rampant, how can we truly celebrate the triumphs of athletes like Rebecca when their lives are constantly under threat? Paris' gesture is certainly commendable, but it's also bittersweet. While memorializing Rebecca is important for keeping her legacy alive, it doesn't address the root issue at hand: the systemic misogyny and lack of support for victims of domestic violence that allows tragedies like this to keep happening.  

What if, instead of just naming buildings after fallen heroes, we invested more resources into prevention and intervention programs? What if every city had 24/7 hotlines, safehouses, and counseling services readily available for women in abusive relationships? Maybe then, Rebecca and so many others could have gotten the help they needed before it was too late. As we mourn Rebecca's death and celebrate her life, let us also use this as a catalyst for change. Let Paris' dedication of a sports venue be a symbol not just of remembrance, but of commitment to creating a world where women can thrive without fear.
