Paging Chaos: A New Kind of Warfare

The system, used by Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terror group, relies on a network of transmission towers that relay coded signals to pagers via radio frequency (RF) technology. The pagers, normally used for routine communication, were reprogrammed to explode upon receiving a specific coded signal. The clever twist? The perpetrator blended in with the system's infrastructure, using a registered controller device to initiate the signal.

Experts say the attack was likely the work of a sophisticated hacker, who exploited the system's design to create chaos. "The genius of this attack lies in its ability to disguise itself as a routine communication," said Bryson Bort, a senior fellow at George Mason University's National Security Institute. "The perpetrator effectively turned the pagers into explosive devices, using the very system designed to keep people informed."
