Package Thieves: A Growing Problem in Washington D. C.
Washington, D.C., USAWednesday, January 8, 2025
Cities like New York and Chicago also faced massive losses. New York lost $1 billion and Chicago lost $450 million due to these thieves. It's astonishing that nearly 93 million packages were stolen in 2023 alone, with 261, 000 incidents happening daily! During the holiday season, things got even worse; around 300, 000 packages went missing every day.
Amazon faced the most losses, with 119 million of their packages being stolen. That means 1 out of every 180 Amazon packages never reached their intended recipient. Walmart also suffered, reporting a $6. 1 billion loss in 2022 due to various types of theft, including porch piracy.
So why does this happen? One reason is the increase in online shopping, especially during the holidays. People leave their packages unattended, making them easy targets for thieves. It’s crucial to find ways to protect our packages and reduce this overwhelming problem.
