NYPD's Top Internal Affairs Chief Steps Down After Sexual Abuse Scandal

The New York Police Department (NYPD) saw a significant change on Saturday when the Chief of Internal Affairs, Miguel Iglesias, announced his retirement. This decision came amidst a serious sexual abuse scandal involving former Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey. The NYPD has launched a widespread personnel review in response to The Post’s reporting on shocking allegations that Maddrey demanded sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for substantial overtime pay. Iglesias' resignation was preceded by his removal from command. NYPD Deputy Chief Edward Thompson, with 38 years of experience, is stepping in as the interim replacement. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized the need for the Internal Affairs Bureau to maintain integrity and root out corruption to uphold public trust.

Sources revealed that Iglesias was slow to investigate the overtime issues related to Lt. Quathisha Epps, who claimed that Maddrey forced her into a sexual relationship. Epps reported that Maddrey’s demands began after he was appointed Chief of Department in June 2023. The overtime hours she worked exceeded 1, 600, making her the highest-paid NYPD employee. The scandal has brought to light concerns about the handling of departmental issues by Internal Affairs. At least two other women have also come forward with accusations against Maddrey. With Mayor Eric Adams and Tisch agreeing on the necessity of a review, the NYPD is working to address these critical issues.
