North Side Transformation: A New Era for Pittsburgh
$740 Million Project to Revitalize Old Parking Lot
When: Monday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Where: 929 Beaver Ave., Chateau neighborhood
A $740 million project called Esplanade is set to transform an old, empty parking lot into a vibrant entertainment district. The groundbreaking ceremony kicks off next week.
What’s Coming?
- Huge Ferris wheel
- Restaurants and shops
- Riverfront relaxation spots
- Grocery store
- Condo building, hotel, and mixed-income apartments
The goal? To turn this former industrial area into a hub for culture, shopping, and community.
Concerns Raised by Local Group
Manchester Neighbors, a local group, has expressed worries about the project’s environmental impact. The site is a brownfield, meaning it has a history of industrial use.
"We believe the developer, Piatt Companies, hasn’t been transparent about potential hazards on the property." — Stanley Lowe, Founder of Manchester Neighbors
Developer’s Response
Piatt Companies insists they’ve conducted thorough environmental studies and have received approvals from the state. They’ve also worked with experts to assess the site.
Who’s Supporting the Project?
- City of Pittsburgh
- Allegheny County
- Local school district
Since the site is uninhabited, no residents will be displaced.
Location & Future Vision
The area is near the Ohio River and the Rivers Casino, which opened in 2009 and has been a major success. The hope is that Esplanade will be just as popular, featuring:
- Marina
- Winter garden
- Green spaces
The ceremony will begin with a video presentation and speeches, followed by the first shovelful of dirt.
