Newark Detention Center: A Closer Look at the Reality
In a recent interview on CNN, Senator Cory Booker highlighted an immigration facility in Newark, shedding light on the realities faced by many detained individuals.
“Most people there are not criminals; their only “crime” is being in the country without proper paperwork.”
Booker explained that many of those detained are already working to obtain green cards or permanent status. During this process, they were removed from the streets and placed in a lower‑security center, not the high‑risk facility in Elizabeth.
The senator noted that only a few individuals have actual legal offenses, such as a past DWI. Most others are simply waiting for their immigration hearings or for a decision on whether they will be deported.
He criticized the current administration’s actions, claiming they are threatening airlines and airports while escalating tensions instead of finding solutions.
Booker’s comments suggest a need to rethink how the U. S. handles undocumented residents who are not dangerous but face uncertainty and disruption in their lives.
