First, let's talk about the recent bird flu outbreak.  It's causing a lot of trouble in New York City.  Several ducks and wild birds at the Queens Zoo have died.  The Bronx Zoo, one of the biggest and most famous zoos in the country, has also been affected. The Wildlife Conservation Society, who runs the zoos, is taking action.

The bird flu scare isn't just happening in the zoos.  It's spreading across the country.  Chickens and dairy cattle are getting sick, and egg prices are going up.  The zoos are trying to figure out what's going on.  Three ducks at the Queens Zoo have died, and up to 12 more birds at the Bronx Zoo that might have been exposed are being tested.

Governor Kathy Hochul took a big step on Friday.  She ordered all live bird markets in New York City and nearby areas to shut down temporarily.  She wants to stop the virus from spreading.  The order from the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets has strict rules.  Markets without any bird flu cases must sell their birds and clean up.  Those with cases have to follow guidelines for quarantine and depopulation.  There are a lot of challenges and questions.

Bird flu isn't new.  It's been around for a while, but it's a big deal.  It can make birds very sick and even kill them.  People can get it too, but it's rare.
