New York Map Stays: A Republican Win

New York, NY, USATuesday, March 3, 2026

The U.S. Supreme Court has kept New York’s congressional map in place after a lower court had ruled the lines unduly weakened Black and Latino voters. The decision came via an emergency order, with no signed opinion, vote count or explanation—an ordinary procedure for such orders.

For Republicans, the ruling means the current map can remain in effect until appeals are resolved and will likely be used in the upcoming midterm elections.

Representative Nicole Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, had requested the Court to block a state judge’s order that would have redrawn her district. The move could have cost her seat. In a brief statement, she thanked the justices, saying they “stopped the voters on Staten Island and in southern Brooklyn from being stripped of their ability to elect a representative who reflects their values.”

The case focuses on New York’s 11th Congressional District, the only city district held by a Republican. It joins other mid‑cycle redistricting disputes that have reached the Court’s emergency docket after President Trump encouraged GOP leaders to redraw maps favorably. Though temporary, the decision gives Republicans a chance to keep the seat in the upcoming elections.
