New Year, New Snow: What to Expect in Massachusetts
The new year might just bring a white blanket to Massachusetts. Starting on New Year's Eve, light snow is expected to cover the state. The weather folks are pretty sure about this, saying there's a good chance of snow overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday morning.
Areas Expected to See the Most Snow
The areas that will see the most snow are:
- Nantucket
- Martha's Vineyard
- Cape Cod
- Southeast part of the state
These places could get about 2-4 inches of snow. Other parts of Massachusetts might only see around an inch.
Winter Weather Advisory Issued
Because of the snow, a winter weather advisory has been issued for Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. It's in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Thursday. The heaviest snow is expected to fall between midnight and 6 a.m. on Thursday.
Strong Winds Expected
Strong winds have been blowing across the state this week, and they're expected to continue. The high wind warnings that were issued on Monday have been lowered to a wind advisory for Northern and Western Massachusetts. Winds there are expected to be between 30-39 mph. Southern New England can expect winds between 40-50 mph.
Cold Temperatures Ahead
Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing for the rest of the week and into the next. With the exception of New Year's Eve, the weather is expected to be cold and dry through Monday morning.
Stay Safe and Bundle Up
So, if you're in Massachusetts, be ready for some snow and cold winds as the new year begins. It's a good idea to bundle up and be careful if you're out and about during this time.
