New Life for East Village Courtyard
A long‑awaited renovation of the 5,600‑square‑foot courtyard behind Soho Lofts at E Fourth and E Locust streets has finally been completed. After two years of hard work, the space is now fresh, inviting, and ready for residents to enjoy.
From Chaos to Calm
- Construction cleared: Old signs, orange cones, and heavy machinery are gone.
- New seating: Adirondack chairs line the perimeter, offering comfortable spots to relax or chat.
- Live music: A small stage provides an acoustic backdrop for local performers.
The Big Overhaul
What began as a simple cosmetic upgrade evolved into a full infrastructure overhaul:
- Ground level design: The courtyard sits below ground, previously prone to rainwater pooling and seeping into the underground parking.
- Storm drainage: The old system was replaced to prevent flooding during heavy showers.
Low‑Maintenance Features
- Artificial turf: Replaces mulch and grass, reducing upkeep.
- Central gas fire pit: Surrounded by lounge seating and dynamic lights that shift colors at night.
Artistic Touches
- Blown‑glass displays: Created by a local glass artist.
- Breezeway mural: Painted by a nearby furniture shop, adding color and character.
A Community Hub
The goal was to create an outdoor gathering spot that encourages neighbors to meet and share. While other units boast pools and gyms, this courtyard offers a unique communal experience that highlights the value of well‑designed urban outdoor spaces.
Celebration
Soho Lofts marked the reopening with a ribbon cutting and live music on Wednesday, June 24. The new courtyard now stands as a testament to thoughtful design and the power of community.
