New Global Spin on Classic Crime Show

United KingdomTuesday, July 21, 2026

The long‑running American news program, known for its deep dives into mysteries and scandals, is stepping onto a new stage. Disney+ has approved the first overseas version of the series, set to launch in Britain next week under the name 20/20 Britain’s Most Notorious Crime Investigations.

A Fresh Take on Classic UK Cases

Instead of following the usual American lineup, the show will revisit six high‑profile UK cases that captured national attention:

  • Jane Andrews – former aide to a royal duchess, found guilty of murder.
  • Ben Field – churchwarden accused of manipulating older people into handing over their estates.
  • Joanna Yeates – disappearance in Bristol remains unsolved.
  • Ben Needham – kidnapping on the Greek island of Kos in the early 1990s.
  • Peter Tobin – Scottish serial killer’s crimes.
  • Mahek Bukhari – TikTok star whose deadly car chase ended with her mother’s lover and his friend.

These stories have already inspired popular TV dramas such as The Lady, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, and The Sixth Commandment. Bringing them back to the screen in documentary form may give viewers fresh insights into how these cases unfolded and why they still matter.

Production Details

The production is a joint effort between Candle True Stories (backed by Candle Media) and ABC News Studios. Executive producers include former ABC boss James Goldston, Alicia Kerr, and Ralph Perring, with senior oversight from David Sloan. The series will debut on Disney+ in the UK and also be available on Hulu in the United States, with episodes rolling out weekly after an initial release of the Needham story.

A Strategic Shift for Disney+

This international move signals a shift for the once‑domestic show, which began in 1978 as a competitor to CBS’s 60 Minutes. After a format change in 2019 that leaned more heavily on true crime and celebrity intrigue, the program has remained a staple of American television.

Disney+ is now investing heavily in premium unscripted content, pairing the new crime series with high‑profile documentaries and adaptations of bestselling books. Competing platforms like Netflix and Prime Video already dominate the global true‑crime market, so this launch could help Disney+ carve out its own niche.

By reimagining a familiar format for a new audience, the show invites viewers to question how media shapes public perception of crime and justice.
