New Digital Guide Brings Asian American Stories into Every Classroom
Los Angeles, USASunday, May 10, 2026
A team from UCLA’s Asian American Studies Center has released a free online textbook that places the histories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the hands of teachers nationwide.
The project, titled “Foundations and Futures,” was crafted by around 100 people—including writers, designers, and historians—over several years. Its aim is to give students a clearer picture of AAPI lives, from everyday struggles to major achievements.
Diverse Communities Covered
- Vietnamese refugees
- Hmong activists
- Native Hawaiians
- New York Taxi Workers Alliance
The book also highlights stories of women who made a difference, such as:
- A Filipina farmworker
- An 8‑year‑old Chinese American girl who fought for the right to attend public school
By sharing these personal tales, creators hope students will develop empathy for those who have faced discrimination.
Why It Matters
- Response to rising anti‑Asian hate during the COVID pandemic.
- Added videos and photos for engaging content.
- Launched alongside California’s law making ethnic studies required for high‑school graduation, securing essential funding.
Accessibility & Future Plans
- The textbook remains free and is backed by a respected university.
- Teachers can use it immediately for marginalized history lessons.
- Authors are seeking additional private funding to add chapters on Tongan, Taiwanese, and other American communities.
