The Menendez brothers have another path to release apart from resentencing. Gascón also wrote letters supporting them for clemency, which could free them before Hochman's term starts. The case is back in the spotlight due to recent Netflix series and documentaries about the case.

The brothers did not deny killing their parents but claimed it was self-defense against long-term abuse. Their first trial ended in a mistrial, and during the second, key defense evidence was excluded, leading to their conviction.
