Netflix Drops Mobile Casting to Most TVs
Major Change Announced
Netflix has made a significant change to its service. It no longer allows users to cast shows from their phones to most TVs and streaming devices. This includes newer Chromecast models and the Google TV Streamer.
User Discovery and Confirmation
Users first noticed this change on Reddit. Netflix later updated its support page to confirm the change. The streaming service now states that it does not support casting from mobile devices to most TVs and streaming devices.
Netflix's Preferred Method
Instead of casting, Netflix wants users to use the remote that came with their TV. Users should use the Netflix app that's built into their TV.
Exceptions to the Rule
There is one exception:
- Older Chromecast models without remotes can still cast.
- TVs with built-in Google Cast support can also cast.
However, even on these devices, casting is only available for users on the more expensive ad-free plans. It is not available for those on the cheaper ad-supported plan.
User Reports and Netflix's Explanation
Users report that Netflix started removing the Cast button from its mobile apps in mid-November. The company did not warn users in advance. One Reddit user stated that customer service explained that devices with remotes can no longer cast, claiming this was to improve the customer experience.
Not the First Time
This is not the first time Netflix has made such a change. In 2019, it removed AirPlay support from its iOS app. At the time, Netflix stated it couldn't differentiate between different AirPlay-enabled devices.
