Nebraska Shares 1990s Football Glory with Florida State

Nebraska, USA, Lincoln,Sunday, July 12, 2026
Nebraska’s football legacy is deep in the state’s heart. The team earned five national titles and many All‑American players over decades. CBS Sports recently honored teams from each decade of college football. For the 1990s, Nebraska was named a co‑team of the decade with Florida State. This shared award marks the peak of Nebraska’s long streak of success. From 1993 to 1997, the Huskers went 60‑3 and captured three national championships. Tom Osborne’s coaching led the program to this explosive finish after a long drought since 1971. Florida State’s record in the same decade was also strong: 109‑13‑1. The Seminoles never ranked lower than fourth in the AP poll and won titles in 1993 and 1999. Their consistency under Bobby Bowden made them a national powerhouse.
Why only one team? Some critics say the decision should have been clear, not split. Others argue that sharing honors reflects how close the records were and shows both programs’ greatness. Nebraska’s 1990s record of 108‑16‑1 is almost identical to Florida State’s. Both teams had many top‑six finishes, but Nebraska earned an extra championship in that decade. The list of team‑of‑the‑decade selections also includes other powerhouses: 1920s – Notre Dame, 1930s – Alabama, 1940s – Notre Dame again, 1950s – Oklahoma, 1960s – Alabama, 1970s – USC, 1980s – Miami, 2000s – Florida, 2010s – Alabama, 2020s – Georgia. Nebraska also appeared as an honorable mention in the 1970s and 1980s, showing a long tradition of excellence.
