Naval Tech Adventure Brings Real‑World STEM to High School

The U. S. Navy recently took its mobile “Strike Group” show to Tohopekaliga High, where students experienced the world of naval aviation and tech in a hands‑on way. Instead of a lecture, kids walked through three interactive stations that used virtual reality headsets, maps and a full‑motion simulator. At the first station, pupils assumed roles on a carrier deck—fueling planes, launching jets and coordinating with teammates. One sophomore said the simulation felt more like real work than a game, highlighting teamwork and communication needed to get an aircraft airborne. The second station focused on humanitarian missions. Students explored a digital map, selecting ships and vehicles to learn how the Navy assists communities after disasters or during medical crises.

The final station put participants in an F‑35C cockpit, letting them practice a carrier launch and landing. The experience showed how advanced tech and problem‑solving are core to naval jobs, skills that translate into any STEM career. A Navy recruiter explained that the tour aims to connect with students who grow up around digital tools, showing them the Navy is not just about uniforms but about cutting‑edge technology and leadership. A retired naval instructor added that the experience made classroom lessons on responsibility and teamwork feel real, letting students picture themselves in those roles. After the visit, a student admitted he had never considered a Navy career before but now wonders how technology and engineering could fit into his future. The tour will keep traveling across Florida, hoping to spark interest in science, engineering and leadership one headset at a time.
