Mysteries of Cosmic Jets Revealed by NASA's X-ray Telescope
Centaurus AWednesday, November 6, 2024
Scientists know jets are powered by stuff that gets swept up by black holes, but they're not sure exactly how material gets channeled into the jets. Some think it might be due to messy magnetic fields around the black hole or the black hole's spin itself. Another mystery is why the brightness of these blobs changes over time. Some blobs get brighter while others fade, something seen before in a different galaxy. Future research might help understand if this behavior is part of how jets work naturally or if it's caused by something in their environment, like interstellar material. The study was published in The Astrophysical Journal.
