Music and Hope: A Sound Tribute for Cancer Survivors

Laguna Beach, CA, USAFriday, June 12, 2026

In a bright corner of South Coast Plaza, music and community collide to celebrate those who have beaten cancer. A local composer‑teacher, known for turning feelings into sound, wrote a four‑minute piece inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem. The melody moves through loss, calm and renewed courage, mirroring her own battles with breast cancer in 2006 and again in 2020.

The City of Hope Orange County has teamed up with the Pacific Symphony to create a live art display called “Music of Hope.”

  • Weekdays (3 – 5 p.m.) – a pianist plays the new composition on a blue grand piano set inside the mall’s Jewel Court.
  • Weekends (2, 4 & 6 p.m.) – the schedule shifts to invite shoppers of all ages.

Visitors are encouraged to write hopeful notes on slips of paper and hang them on “wishing trees.” These simple gestures let people share encouragement with survivors or those who know someone brave enough to face cancer. The installation runs through June 18, aligning with National Cancer Survivors Month.

City of Hope’s president highlighted how many people are moved by the project, noting that survivors and their friends often feel compelled to write. For those who wish to leave a message or hear from other supporters, the office can be reached at (626) 218‑4056.

This partnership marks the fourth consecutive year of bringing music to cancer awareness. National statistics show that 70 % of Americans diagnosed with cancer survive at least five years, a record high. Early detection remains key: the survival rate for Stage 1 breast cancer tops 99 %. Yet many people delay screenings, letting busy lives take over. The project hopes to remind us all that timely check‑ups can change outcomes.
