More Students Than Ever Are Studying Medicine in the U. S.
Over 100,000 Students Pursuing Medical Degrees
The number of students in U.S. medical schools has reached an all-time high, with over 100,000 individuals now on the path to becoming doctors. This surge reflects a growing interest in healthcare careers.
Women Dominate the Applicant Pool
For the first time, more than half of the applicants and incoming students are women. This trend, which began in 2019, continues to strengthen. While men are also applying in greater numbers, they remain a minority.
Diverse Backgrounds and Ages
Students come from all corners of the country, with California, Texas, and Florida leading in applicant numbers. The student body is also diverse in terms of race and ethnicity, though the representation of Black men in medical school has seen little change over the decades.
The age range of students is broad, spanning from 18 to 60, with many applicants over 30. These students are academically strong, boasting high average grades and test scores.
A Commitment to Community Service
Before entering medical school, these students dedicated nearly 17 million hours to community service, demonstrating a strong commitment to helping others.
A Step Toward Greater Diversity, But More Work Ahead
This data highlights the increasing interest in medical careers and the growing diversity within medical schools. However, efforts must continue to ensure equal representation across all groups.
