Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is facing heat over a $250 million COVID-19 relief fraud scheme that unfolded on his watch.

The House Education and Workforce Committee wants answers, issuing a subpoena for documents related to the scandal. Instead of nourishing hungry children, the money funded lavish lifestyles for the operators of a fraudulent Minneapolis-based nonprofit, Feeding Our Future.

The program was administered by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), which handed out the funds and then sought reimbursement from the USDA.  But how did this massive fraud occur?  Did anyone miss red flags?

The MDE conducted an audit that found they 'created opportunities for fraud' and 'maintained inadequate oversight'.  That begs the question: what were they actually overseeing?

Walz claims he knew about suspicious activity as early as November 2020.  Yet, he allowed payments to continue after Feeding Our Future sued the MDE, alleging racial discrimination.  Was this a genuine concern, or was it a convenient excuse to keep the money flowing?

The governor also shifted blame to a Minnesota judge, claiming he was forced to continue payouts.  But the judge issued a statement contradicting Walz's narrative, saying the MDE voluntarily resumed payments.

Adding to the intrigue, Walz presented an award to another fraudster involved in the scheme, despite her participation.  This raises serious questions about his awareness and potential complicity.

The House committee, frustrated by a lack of cooperation from Walz's office, is also subpoenaing the USDA and its inspector general for more information.  What are the implications of this scandal?  Did Walz prioritize political expediency over protecting taxpayer dollars?  Was there a systemic failure within the MDE?
