Schizophrenia and disordered eating habits are closely linked  and this is not breaking news. People with schizophrenia are way more likely to struggle with obesity and eating disorders than the average person. It is believed that the risk of obesity is two to five times higher, and the risk of disordered eating is up to three times higher. Now, there is a tool called the Eating Attitude Test (EAT) that has been around for a while and is used to assess eating disorders in general. However, it remains unclear whether it can do the same for those with schizophrenia.

Researchers have developed a shorter version of the EAT called the EAT-7. This new version is designed to make it easier to screen for disordered eating in patients with psychotic disorders. To test its effectiveness, a study focused on individuals with newly diagnosed schizophrenia who were just beginning their treatment with minimal exposure to antipsychotics.

When it comes to the measurement needs and clinical decision-making, the real question is whether the EAT-7 can effectively identify disordered eating behavior in these patients. This means that clinicians and researchers can use it to guide their care and study plans. Some believe that the EAT-7 might fall short because of the complex emotional and cognitive aspects which are different in patients with first-episode schizophrenia.

Trying to get into the heads of those with schizophrenia to understand their eating habits is a tough task.  Eating habits and the overall mental state of schizophrenia patients are  hard to separate. If the EAT-7 can help shed some light on these issues, it would be a big win for both the clinical community and those battling.

The findings of this study could pave the way for better screening tools for eating disorders in patients with schizophrenia. Imagine being able to catch these issues early on.
