Microsoft's AI Data Center Plans Hit the Brakes
Licking County, USAThursday, April 10, 2025
The demand for AI tools has been growing rapidly. Millions of people are now using chatbots and other AI tools at work and at home. However, the computing power needed to run these tools is expensive and requires a lot of electricity. This has led to discussions about using different energy sources, including coal and nuclear power.
Despite the slowdown in some projects, Microsoft still plans to invest over $80 billion this fiscal year to expand its AI infrastructure. The company has doubled its data center capacity over the past three years. However, the pause in the Ohio project was a disappointment for local officials. Licking County has been a hotspot for data center investments, attracting competitors like Google and Meta Platforms, as well as a major semiconductor factory from Intel.
