Millions Expected to Travel for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a significant travel period in the U.S., with over 80 million people expected to hit the roads. In Michigan alone, 2.3 million people are planning to travel, many driving more than 50 miles to reach their destinations.

Winter Weather Alert

Winter weather is approaching Southeast Michigan, bringing lake-effect snow and strong winds. Road crews are monitoring the forecast closely and are prepared to salt and plow roads if necessary.

"We have a detailed plan for every day and time." - Craig Bryson, Senior Communications Manager

While the holiday may mean less rush hour traffic, weather conditions could still cause delays.

Road Departments on High Alert

Road departments are preparing their plow trucks, stocked with salt and brine. Bryson explained that they will pretreat roads with liquid brine when weather conditions allow, helping to prevent icy conditions.

Safety First

Safety is a top priority. Drivers are reminded to stay at least 200 feet away from plow trucks, a rule that was enacted in Michigan last year. Wayne County's Road Maintenance Division is also preparing, with over 100 plow trucks ready to deploy.

"Safety is important for both our drivers and the public." - Scott Cabauatan, Deputy Director

Crews will begin treating roads before the snow hits, focusing on busy roads like expressways. Cabauatan noted that they have over 100 snow routes, each with a driver and a truck.

Travel Tips

Experts advise:

  • Slow down in snowy or icy conditions.
  • Give yourself extra travel time.
  • Be prepared for more snow this weekend.
