Meta Bans Jet-Tracking Accounts for Safety Reasons

Meta has recently taken down several accounts that tracked the whereabouts of private jets belonging to famous people like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Donald Trump. These accounts were removed from Meta's platforms, including Instagram, Threads, and soon, Facebook. The accounts were managed by Jack Sweeney, a Florida college student. The billionaires and public figures were tracked using public flight data, but Meta deemed this a risk to their safety. Jack Sweeney argues that his project has journalistic value because it reveals CEO activities and draws attention to the carbon emissions from private jet flights. However, Meta decided to remove these accounts to protect individuals from potential harm, following a recommendation from their independent Oversight Board. This board had earlier suggested taking down references to a person's home, which Meta extended to include personal flight data.

Meta has been progressively tightening its moderation rules. Earlier this year, they announced they'd stop promoting accounts that share political content. These jet-tracking accounts, while useful for journalists, have become controversial. Elon Musk had previously banned similar accounts on Twitter for violating doxxing rules. Musk had also threatened legal action against Sweeney, but didn't follow through. Sweeney's accounts on other platforms like Bluesky remain active. He has faced threats from attorneys representing Taylor Swift, who also had accounts tracking her jet removed by Meta. It's vital to understand that flight data can be accessed through the FAA, but some owners can obscure their flight details. Jet-tracking services use specialized hardware to intercept signals specific to individual jets.
