Meta Bans Jet-Tracking Accounts for Safety Reasons
Florida, USAWednesday, October 23, 2024
Meta has been progressively tightening its moderation rules. Earlier this year, they announced they'd stop promoting accounts that share political content. These jet-tracking accounts, while useful for journalists, have become controversial. Elon Musk had previously banned similar accounts on Twitter for violating doxxing rules. Musk had also threatened legal action against Sweeney, but didn't follow through.
Sweeney's accounts on other platforms like Bluesky remain active. He has faced threats from attorneys representing Taylor Swift, who also had accounts tracking her jet removed by Meta. It's vital to understand that flight data can be accessed through the FAA, but some owners can obscure their flight details. Jet-tracking services use specialized hardware to intercept signals specific to individual jets.
