Measuring Blood Pressure: Are You Following the Right Steps?
USAWednesday, October 9, 2024
Quietly sit for five minutes before the reading to let your body relax. When it's time, use a cuff that fits your upper arm and place it on your bare skin, not over clothes. Take at least two readings and record the average. Ideally, measure both arms and note the higher reading.
Deviations from these steps can seriously affect your reading. For example, using a cuff over clothes can increase the reading by 50 mm Hg, making early hypertension seem like a crisis. If you need to pee, the reading can jump by 15 mm Hg. Even talking can boost it by 10 mm Hg.
