A cluster of 13 measles cases has emerged at the Camp East Montana detention center near El Paso, Texas. In response, authorities have locked down the facility and halted all internal movement. Health workers are now monitoring every detainee closely, administering treatment to keep the spread under control.

State Health Officials report a total of 17 measles cases in El Paso County this month.
Four of those were confirmed by the city’s public health department, noting that the detention center lies outside its limits.
The camp sits on a former Army base and was built last year to hold thousands of immigrants.

Earlier this year, other Texas facilities reported measles:

  • Dilley Immigration Processing Center (southwest Texas) logged at least two cases.
  • A detention center in Florence, Arizona confirmed one more.

The rise of infections in these settings has raised alarms about conditions inside detention centers nationwide. The Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed that all infected detainees are quarantined and receiving proper care, emphasizing ongoing monitoring to prevent further spread.

The situation highlights the challenges of keeping contagious diseases under control in crowded, temporary housing.
Public health officials are urging stricter protocols and better sanitation to protect both detainees and staff.
