Measles Alert: A Wake-Up Call for Vaccination
Long Island, USAThursday, March 13, 2025
The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has clear guidelines for measles vaccinations. Children should get their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months and a second dose between 4 and 6 years old, before starting school. However, only about 81% of children in New York have received their first doses by the age of 2. This is a concern because it means that a significant number of children are not protected against measles.
Two infants in New York City under 12 months old contracted the virus earlier this year. This highlights the importance of vaccination for preventing the spread of measles. New York City had 14 measles cases last year. New Jersey also reported three measles cases last month, but health officials have since confirmed that there is no ongoing transmission in the state.
The situation in Suffolk County serves as a reminder that measles is still a threat. It's crucial for everyone to stay up-to-date on their vaccinations to protect themselves and others. This is especially important for young children who are too young to be vaccinated and rely on herd immunity for protection. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of measles and keep the community safe.
