McDonald's Traces E. Coli Outbreak to Onion Supplier

McDonald's has identified Taylor Farms as the supplier of the onions linked to a recent E. coli outbreak. The outbreak, which has affected at least 49 people and caused one death, has been traced back to the slivered onions served on Quarter Pounder burgers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been investigating the source of the contamination, focusing on the onions as the likely cause. Taylor Farms, a California-based producer of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, announced a recall of four raw onion products out of caution. Restaurants were advised to stop using and destroy the affected products immediately. This recall also led to other restaurant chains, such as Illegal Pete’s and Taco Bell, removing onions from their menus.

The onions were processed at a single facility and distributed to restaurants in pre-packaged bags. McDonald's stated that the raw onions came from a single supplier but did not specify the location of the farm. The strain of E. coli involved, O157:H7, can produce a powerful toxin that damages the intestinal lining. Health officials expect the number of cases to rise. McDonald's is now facing legal action. A law firm representing affected individuals filed a second lawsuit on behalf of a Nebraska resident who fell ill after eating a Quarter Pounder. This is the second lawsuit filed by the firm, the first being on behalf of a Colorado resident who also became sick after eating at McDonald's.
