McDonald's Invests Big After Onion Scare

McDonald’s is pouring $100 million into its business to win back customers after a recent E. coli outbreak. The outbreak was linked to onions used in their Quarter Pounder burgers. The hardest-hit franchises will receive $65 million of this investment. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified the slivered onions on the burgers as the likely source. Taylor Farms in California recalled the onions potentially tied to the outbreak. States like Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and New Mexico reported numerous cases. Between September 12 and October 21, at least 104 people got sick, with 34 requiring hospitalization.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that there doesn't seem to be an ongoing food safety concern related to this outbreak at McDonald’s. However, the incident affected the company’s sales. Quarter Pounders were temporarily removed from menus in various states. McDonald’s quickly found an alternative supplier to get the burgers back on the menu in over 900 restaurants. Just last week, the popular Quarter Pounders with slivered onions were back on the menu across the country.
