Marysville shelter opens last-minute doors for fire victims

A late-night fire in Marysville Monday forced ten adults with special needs from their home, leaving them with nowhere safe to stay as nighttime temperatures dropped. Firefighters responded swiftly, but the damage left the group in immediate need of shelter—many had no nearby family to turn to.

The Marysville Cold Weather Shelter, set to close soon, had just enough space left, already housing fifty people. Supervisor Kathie Knight and volunteer Jan Barnes sprang into action, working with firefighters to set up extra beds. Their efforts went beyond logistics—they ensured every person felt secure and warm in a shared space.

Nathan Ray, who manages the shelter, called the night a testament to community. Fire crews stayed overnight to monitor the new arrivals, reinforcing the shelter’s mission: no questions asked, just open doors for those in need. For these ten, that last-minute decision made all the difference.
