Marmosets in Brazil: A Window into Human Health
Northeastern Brazil, Petrolina,Monday, January 13, 2025
Tests showed that a few marmosets had been exposed to flaviviruses, a group of viruses that includes dengue and Zika. One marmoset even had the Zika virus (ZIKV). This is interesting because Zika had a big outbreak in Brazil a few years ago, but human cases dropped after that.
The findings suggest that these marmosets are coming into contact with viruses that can also affect humans. This highlights the importance of keeping an eye on viruses in wildlife. It's not just about animal health; it's also about human health and protecting our environment.
