Manhattan Murder Case: Suspect Faces Federal Charges

A man suspected of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare on a Manhattan street is now dealing with federal charges too. This is on top of the state murder charges he already faces. The suspect, Luigi Mangione, is 26 years old. These federal charges come from the U. S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
The federal case could open the door to the death penalty, which New York has banned for a long time. The Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, has already indicted Mangione. He faces three murder charges, with two of them saying he's a terrorist. The maximum punishment he could get in state court is life in prison without parole. We don't know exactly what federal charges Mangione will face. We also don't know if federal prosecutors will go for the death penalty. That decision might be made after President-elect Donald J. Trump takes office. The U. S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan didn't comment on this.
