Manganese: The Hidden Culprit in Parkinsonism

Overexposure to manganese can lead to brain damage, making it behave like Parkinson's disease. Astrocytes, which are like assistants in the brain, are supposed to clean up a protein called α-Syn. Scientists injected mice with manganese every day for six weeks and found that without Serpina3n, mice were less affected by brain damage and movement problems.

It turns out, Serpina3n makes it hard for astrocytes to break down α-Syn by messing with the tiny powerhouses called lysosomes. By changing how well lysosomes work, Serpina3n lets manganese cause more harm. This new discovery sheds light on how manganese causes trouble in the brain and hints at possible ways to stop it.
