The Maldives has taken a significant step to safeguard public health. Starting last Saturday, individuals born after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from purchasing or using tobacco products. This means that today's teens and younger children will never legally be able to smoke in the Maldives, regardless of their age in the future.

A Healthier Future

This new regulation is part of the Maldives' initiative to foster a healthier future. The government aims to prevent tobacco use before it begins. The ban applies to everyone in the country, including tourists. Retailers caught selling tobacco to minors face a substantial fine of 50,000 rufiyaa, approximately $3,200.

Strict E-Cigarette and Vaping Regulations

The Maldives maintains a rigorous stance on e-cigarettes and vaping. The country enforces a complete ban on the import, sale, and use of these devices. Violators could be fined 5,000 rufiyaa, roughly $320.

Global Context

Only one other country, New Zealand, attempted a similar ban, but it was repealed in 2023. The United Kingdom has also considered implementing such measures.

Will the Ban Succeed?

The effectiveness of this ban remains uncertain. Will it deter young people from smoking, or will they find alternative means to obtain tobacco? While the outcome is unclear, the Maldives is taking a firm stance to protect its citizens' health.
