Los Angeles plans to end oil drilling in neighborhoods

Los Angeles is moving toward banning oil drilling in residential areas, a decision years in the making. Many residents near drilling sites complain about constant noise, bad smells, heavy truck traffic, and health worries. During a recent meeting, activists protested under banners like "Wilmington will not be fooled, " showing frustration with delays in stopping the practice. City leaders say thousands of oil wells still operate in Los Angeles, some hidden behind walls or disguised as regular buildings. While the city voted in 2022 to stop new drilling and phase out existing wells, a court overturned the rule. But a new state law in 2024 gave cities more control to limit oil and gas operations for health and environmental reasons. The biggest burden falls on Black, Latino, and low-income neighborhoods, where people have had to deal with pollution for too long.

Now, the city is revisiting the issue, aiming to make oil drilling illegal in all zones within 20 years. Leaders argue no one should have to live near active drilling sites or wear masks just to enjoy their own yards. The city will also ask lawyers to draft a new rule while excluding wells run by public utilities. Meanwhile, the oil industry warns that local bans could raise energy costs and make fuel less reliable for everyone.
