Lobbying Scandal: Watchdog Group Calls for Stricter Rules

Common Cause Rhode Island has filed a complaint against Michael Magee, the former CEO of Chiefs for Change. The complaint alleges that Magee failed to register as a lobbyist, even though he was involved in steering a multimillion-dollar state education contract to the ILO Group. This came after Governor Daniel McKee’s administration was found to have violated procurement rules in awarding the contract. The Attorney General had earlier concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge McKee with criminal bribery. However, the investigation highlighted questionable practices in the contract award process.

What makes this situation intriguing is the role Magee played. He introduced the ILO Group in a Zoom meeting and later attempted to influence the bidding process in favor of the company. Despite this, no record of Magee registering as a lobbyist could be found. Common Cause seeks stricter gift regulations for public officials and a review of procurement ethics laws. The group also plans to push for tougher limits on in-kind contributions to candidates in the upcoming General Assembly session. John Marion, the executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island, expressed disappointment with the current public integrity laws, stating they didn’t prevent the unethical behavior revealed in the ILO Group investigations. While few might be held accountable, Marion aims to ensure that such behavior won’t be repeated.
