Living with HIV in Dar es Salaam: The Hidden Struggles

In the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, living with HIV comes with a heavy burden. Stigma is a constant companion, making life harder for those affected. Between December 2021 and June 2022, a study shed light on how this stigma impacts their daily lives.

• Participants: 33 individuals from Ilala Municipality
• Method: Focus group discussions

The Impact of Stigma

Stigma affects people with HIV in three major ways:

1. Health

• Many skip clinic appointments
• Struggle with medication adherence
• Experience weight loss and other health problems

2. Mental and Emotional Well-being

• Common issues: Fear, stress, depression
• Families face instability
• Social interactions become limited
• Learning environments turn difficult

3. Financial Stability

• Many lose jobs or are denied employment
• Financial support dries up
• Life becomes even more challenging
