Maverick Carter, a close friend and business partner of NBA star LeBron James, is playing a key role in a new international basketball league. This league aims to raise $5 billion from private investors to create a global circuit of six men's and six women's teams. The plan is for these teams to travel to different cities around the world, with each city hosting games for two weeks. Singapore is one of the potential destinations. It's not yet clear who the players for this league would be. Currently, top talent is already drawn to leagues in Europe and Asia outside the NBA. However, the new league could eventually attract NBA players if it offers them equity, allowing them to earn more money. This approach is similar to the WNBA's Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league, which starts its first season in January. This league, co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Naphessa Collier, offers players competitive salaries and equity.

The idea of this international league echoes the shift seen in golf with LIV Golf, which attracted top players from the PGA with big paydays. If this new basketball league succeeds in attracting wealthy investors, it could pose competition for the NBA in the future. While NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has said there are no plans to allow sovereign wealth funds to control NBA teams, the new league could still attract mid-tier NBA players with the promise of higher earnings overseas. This could create a real challenge for the NBA down the line.
