Last Night at the Zoo: A Final Evening Adventure
San Diego, California, USASaturday, June 20, 2026
Nighttime Zoo first launched in 1994, offering a nightly adventure that quickly grew from four nights a week to full seven‑day operation. The initial season attracted nearly 288, 000 visitors after dusk—almost three times the expected turnout—and proved that people love to see animals when they are more active and to enjoy cooler evening temperatures. Early on, the zoo monitored animal welfare closely; for example, pygmy chimpanzees were moved to a sleeping area an hour before sunset after staff noticed they were dozing in the exhibit.
The program’s history also ties into the Wild Animal Park, which began hosting overnight camping experiences in the same year. Guests could stay in tents, dine by a campfire, and stroll through the park at night—an idea that evolved into a permanent campground known as Roar & Snore.
The ending of Nighttime Zoo marks the conclusion of a beloved summer tradition, but it also opens the door for new adventures that the zoo plans to unveil next year.
