Kids' Vaccinations in the US: A Dropping Trend

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released some concerning news. The vaccination rates for kindergartners in the US have dropped again. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 92% of kids got their routine shots—a decrease from 93% last year and 95% in 2019-2020. The drop is mainly due to more parents opting out of vaccines for religious or philosophical reasons. Only a tiny 0.2% of exemptions are medically necessary. This means many kids are at risk of serious diseases like measles, whooping cough, and polio. MMR vaccination, for example, fell to 92.7%, leaving about 280,000 kindergartners vulnerable.

Vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) also dropped, along with polio and chickenpox vaccines. For the fourth year in a row, the US is below the 95% target needed to prevent these diseases from spreading. And it's getting worse. Why are some parents saying no to vaccines that have been proven safe and effective?
