Kenyan President Stops Controversial Financial Bill
Kenya, NairobiMonday, October 7, 2024
Kenya wanted to change some taxes to control public debt. This made people angry, especially when they faced a high cost of living. The government tried to fix things by canceling some tax increases, but people were still upset. Things got worse when police started shooting teargas and bullets at protesters. Buildings were set on fire, and even a special mace from the parliament was taken. At least 23 people died during the protests.
Ruto said he was sorry for the deaths and wants to talk to the young protesters. Some groups want high-level police officers to resign because they think police targeted protesters. Even some social media users were arrested, and some are still missing. Ruto had been tough about the bill before, but he changed his mind after the serious protests.
