Kane County's Plea: Cut $5 Million or Justify Why You Can't

In an effort to balance the 2025 budget, the Kane County Board Finance and Budget Committee has requested county departments and offices to make a collective $5 million in cuts. If cuts are not feasible, they must provide a valid explanation. This request is part of the committee's proposal to cover a projected $28.3 million deficit, which also includes using $15 million in cash reserves, transferring funds from capital projects, and moving RTA transportation sales tax revenue to the general fund. The proposed cuts, initially set at $10 million, were reduced after county officials spoke against them during the meeting's public comment time. Officials, including Sheriff Ron Hain and State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser, argued that cuts would lead to staff reductions, impacting their ability to provide state-mandated services.

Mosser warned that if the Kane County Board proceeds with budget cuts to public safety offices, they would have 'no choice but to sue the County Board to reasonably fund public safety.' This legal action would cost the county even more in legal fees, she added. County departments and offices have been asked to submit their new budgets with the requested cuts or explanations for why cuts cannot be made by Friday.
