Journey to Europa: NASA's Shuttle to Jupiter's Icy Moon
Kennedy Space Center, USAMonday, October 14, 2024
The mission will take approximately five and a half years before Europa Clipper reaches the Jupiter system in April 2030. Once there, the spacecraft will spend four years exploring Europa. This icy moon is intriguing because it’s believed to have a salty ocean beneath its thick ice layer, which sometimes leaks through giant water plumes.
Scientists hope to learn whether Europa is habitable for life forms different from those on Earth. The spacecraft carries state-of-the-art instruments to perform detailed studies.
