Journey to Europa: NASA's Shuttle to Jupiter's Icy Moon

NASA and SpaceX are eager to send the Europa Clipper spacecraft toward Jupiter's moon Europa, the launch now set for Monday, October 14, 2024. This $5 billion project has been delayed due to Hurricane Milton, which caused havoc at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch window is incredibly small: just 15 seconds, starting at 12:06 p.m. EDT (1606 GMT).

The mission will take approximately five and a half years before Europa Clipper reaches the Jupiter system in April 2030. Once there, the spacecraft will spend four years exploring Europa. This icy moon is intriguing because it’s believed to have a salty ocean beneath its thick ice layer, which sometimes leaks through giant water plumes. Scientists hope to learn whether Europa is habitable for life forms different from those on Earth. The spacecraft carries state-of-the-art instruments to perform detailed studies.
