Johan Manzambi: A Swiss Kid with African Roots and Faith
Johan grew up in Geneva’s lively La Servette area, where his Swiss life mixed with the music and stories from his parents’ homes in Congo and Angola.
“I was always surrounded by different cultures, and that shaped who I am today.”
When he was four, he joined Servette FC’s youth team and quickly showed a knack for controlling the midfield. His dad, seeing this talent, pushed him away from his original goal‑keeping dream to a spot in the center of the field. That switch helped him shine early on.
At 17, Johan chose to leave Switzerland for the SC Freiburg academy in Germany, deciding that training with top‑level coaches was more important than a traditional university path. This move sped up his growth and put him on the radar of national selectors.
Johan’s identity is a blend: he holds Swiss nationality but carries the spirit of his African heritage, thanks to his Congolese father and Angolan mother. He proudly represents Switzerland in youth internationals while keeping close ties to his family’s roots.
“Faith plays a big part in my life; I listen to gospel music before games and start each day with prayer. It keeps me calm on the field and helps me face setbacks with resilience.”
