Jakobi Meyers: A Smart Swap for Both Raiders and Jaguars
Jakobi Meyers, a reliable wide receiver, has moved from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The trade involved the Jaguars giving up fourth- and sixth-round picks.
A Deal That Makes Sense for Both Teams
Meyers wanted a trade back in August when he and the Raiders couldn't agree on a new contract. He stuck to his request in October. The 28-year-old was in the last year of a three-year, $33 million deal he signed in 2023 with Las Vegas.
A Familiar Face in Jacksonville
Before his last game with the Raiders, Meyers played against the Jaguars. He caught four passes for 23 yards in a game the Jaguars won. He also spoke with Tony Boselli, the Jags' executive vice president of football operations, and coach Liam Coen. Boselli's son, Adam, was Meyers' teammate at North Carolina State.
A Proven Performer
Meyers started his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2019. He led the team in receiving yards for three straight seasons before joining the Raiders. He should help the Jaguars' offense with his experience and consistency.
Career Highlights
- Last season: 1,027 receiving yards (career-high)
- Last four years: At least 800 receiving yards each year
- Six full seasons: Averaged 65.5 receptions and 765.3 yards with 20 career touchdown receptions
The Raiders' Perspective
The Raiders' offense has struggled this season with quarterback Geno Smith and coach Pete Carroll. Tre Tucker has become their top receiver, while tight end Brock Bowers has dealt with a knee injury.
With Bowers back and healthy, the Raiders have shifted their offense to use more two-tight end sets. Tucker provides speed, making Meyers less important. Meyers primarily plays in the slot, where Bowers is also strong.
The Jaguars' Gain
For the Jaguars, Meyers gives quarterback Trevor Lawrence a dependable target. The Jaguars have struggled with catching passes. Meyers didn't drop a pass last year. The trade seems like a win for both teams.
