Jail Detainee Admits to Arson, Threats in Plea Deal

In Rochester, Minnesota, a man named Devon Floyd Sackett has agreed to plead guilty to some of the charges against him from incidents that took place at the Olmsted County Jail. Sackett, 47, was initially unable to stand trial due to being deemed incompetent in February. However, this decision was overturned in August, setting the stage for a trial in January. Sackett's troubles began last year. In November, he allegedly threatened two Olmsted County Detention Deputies. Then, in December, he started a fire in his cell using a paperclip in an outlet, causing significant damage. He also ripped out parts of his cell's toilet and sink, and later broke a sprinkler head and a window in another room he was moved to.

The total estimated damage to the jail was around $4, 500. On Friday, Sackett entered a plea deal, agreeing to plead guilty to one felony threat charge and a first-degree property damage count. In return, the prosecution will drop the remaining charges. Sackett will be sentenced in January. This case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with inmates who exhibit violent behavior. It also raises questions about the resources needed to maintain secure facilities and ensure the safety of both staff and other inmates.
